This design was inspired by a quilt I created using improv piecing. I thought I could achieve a similar effect on a small-scale using needle turn appliqué.
Simple embroidery stitches add texture and the elongated curves are perfect for a hand appliqué novice or for some mindful stitching.
Turn your appliqué panel into either a rectangular cushion cover or use a larger background piece to make a square mini quilt (or cushion!).
This 10 page PDF pattern contains templates and instructions to make: 12” x 15” pillow or 15” mini quilt. The pattern includes full embroidery stitch guide, extensive needle-turn applique tips and instructions for raw-edge machine applique.
Difficulty Rating: 1 (super easy)
Requirements for Appliqué Panel
- 13” x 16” background fabric (15½” square for mini quilt)
- A mixture of different coloured fabric for hills, ranging in size from 3” to 8”
- Water soluble pen or similar
- Matching thread for appliqué. I recommend Aurifil 80wt cotton
- Embroidery threads in a range of colours to coordinate or contrast with your fabric. I recommend Aurifil 12wt wool or 8wt cotton.
- Suitable needles for both weights of thread
- Clover Appliqué Pins (optional)
