Flower Mandala Cushion PDF Pattern

This flower mandala was originally designed for Aurifil’s Thread Labs Subscription Box in 2023. Although I have previously stitched versions of this design as both an embroidery hoop and a modern quilt. In this cushion version needle turn appliqué is used to stitch brightly coloured fabric to some areas of the pattern while background fabric is left empty in between, both are then filled with embroidery embellishment and big stitch hand quilting. The finished pillow acquires an interesting texture and can be finished as either a cushion cover or a mini quilt. 

A mandala is traditionally an aid to meditation and I’m sure you will find this journey into slow stitching very mindful indeed.

Requirements for Cushion

·       Background fabric - for four quarters approx. 10 ½” square each

·       Accent pieces, petals, circles, curves – a wide range of brightly coloured fabric in shades of orange, pink, yellow, turquoise, charcoal and mauve. Sizes ranging from scraps up to 11” square

·       Wadding - 20” square

·       Backing Fabric - two pieces 12” x 18 ¾” each

·       Binding - 5” x WOF

·       Fine matching thread for appliqué such as Aurifil 80wt

·       Embroidery threads such as Aurifil 12wt wool in several matching shades

·       Hand quilting threads such as Aurifil 12wt or 8wt cotton

·       Water soluble pen or similar

·       Clover applique pins (optional)

·       18” Pillow Pad
